The Polkhovski Maiden nesting doll has beautiful, bright colors in the traditional matryoshka style. What make this doll special is that no two dolls are alike. The surprise is part of the fun. You may have noticed that there are many matryoshka dolls, including this one, that have maidens holding roses. That tradition is inspired by a legend about Alenka. This heroic maiden led an uprising against the czar. She was unfortunately burned mercilessly at the stake for her crime and buried near her home. As legend goes, the Maiden Rose grew upon her grave. The Maiden and her rose is a symbol of the Maiden's independent spirit, and thus found its way into the motifs of the village's work. A wonderful gift for someone that collects matryoshka dolls.

The doll is entirely hand painted at the Golden Cockerel workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia. The artists painstakingly hand paint every detail, beginning with backgrounds and moving to the finer elements that require a brush of very select Siberian squirrel hair. Then the dolls have multiple layers of non-toxic water-based lacquer applied.

This Polkhovski Maiden doll has Five pieces, but it is also available in Seven pieces or Ten pieces.

Size of the Largest Piece: 5.5 inches in height
The Nesting Set Includes: Five Matryoshka Images

Please note that the smaller pieces can be very small. Please make sure your recipient is old enough and wise enough not to swallow the characters (around three and older).
